First, when you’re explaining your situation is to outline your expectations. If you want your investigator to go all the way to the end of your case then that should be planned in the beginning. Always remember your investigator is not magic and there’s not always going to be an immediate solution.Expectations should be communicated at the initial contact as well as through the case because they could evolve. Communication to your investigator can show your willingness to help and keep up accountability. However, there is such a thing as calling too much. Spending too much time on the phone with you can, at times, hinder the investigator’s ability to fully conduct services. Also, all expectations should be planned and outlined in your contract.

Even through good communication and a strong contract, there is never a guarantee. Just because you believe something is going on doesn’t mean it actually is. Be sure to prepare yourself for any and all outcomes. That includes finding nothing. Investigators will do their best to try and work with the client by all legal means necessary. This could also mean trusting the investigator when they say there’s no more work to be done. Some extra tips for attorney’s would be to communicate what may help your case the most. As an expert in legal proceedings you will know the direction you want the case to move. Be sure to point your investigator in that direction. Provide any and all materials to your PI as soon as possible, the investigator needs to be as well versed in the issues at hand as you are. The attorney should also decide who they would like to be the point of contact and ultimately “in charge” of the case. If you would like direct communication to your client, advise your investigator of those details. Finally, keep up the communication.
