In a recent case, some of our investigators were able to lower a charge for a defendant charged with murder.
In 2020 Metro Nashville Police were dispatched to an apartment near Trevecca University in Nashville after a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival there was a man laying on the floor dead and a lone female nearby with bloody hands. As suspected, the female was pegged as the culprit…a murderer. The female, identified as Pam, was taken to the police station for an interview. Pam admitted that they were smoking crack cocaine and at some point her boyfriend became angry and threatened to stab Pam. A struggle ensued over the knife and Pam was able to gain control, defend her life, and stab her boyfriend. Even after explaining how the events unfolded, Pam was still charged with murder.
Covert Results investigators were hired by Attorney Ben Powers to look into this AOC appointed case. Upon further investigation and a dive into the relationship of Pam and her boyfriend, evidence revealed a vast history of domestic violence. Covert Results investigators first learned of the violent past the two had where Pam’s boyfriend frequently assaulted her. Once investigators gained knowledge of the case, they conducted interviews of residents that lived near Pam to get a better understanding of the abuse. According to multiple witnesses Pam was only guilty of one thing…and that was wanting to live!
Covert Results investigators were instrumental in numerous areas of the case, to include: interpreting medical records, recreating the crime scene, and meeting with use of force experts. After a full review of the case, investigators met with Attorney Powers who was ready to head to trial. The Assistant DA prosecuting the case had not made any meaningful offers until she saw some of the cards aka the defense witness list. Ultimately a plea offer of Voluntary Manslaughter was accepted and Pam is likely to be out of jail in less than a year.
