As a kid, I had many different ideas of what I wanted to do when I grew up. Going through college, I discovered that I am interested in intelligence and security, but had no idea where to start. My name is Abbie, I will be a senior at the University of Mississippi, and this summer, I am interning with Covert Results. After searching for a Nashville security internship on Google, I found Covert Results and was immediately intrigued to learn about private investigation. I had heard about it before and was interested in the field, but I never fully understood just how much private investigators do. Today is only my third official day and I have already learned and experienced so much.

Before starting, I wasn’t sure exactly what kind of role I would play for the company, but I was hoping it was more than getting coffee and filing papers. My expectations were completely blown away when I learned what my first day would look like. On my first day, I met with a Nashville attorney about a cold case homicide. Getting to see how the attorney and client worked together to form a clear and concise testimony was incredibly informative. I learned how detailed and specific testimonies need to be, got a preview of what kind of questions may be asked in questioning or trial, and was able to understand what roles a private investigator can play in criminal cases. Getting hands-on experience is the best way to learn something and this internship is definitely allowing for that. From just a couple hours with the attorney and our investigators, I learned that there is so much more to private investigation than stake-outs and surveillance.

After my first day, I couldn’t wait to see what would come next. I was working on social media monitoring, reading over a fraud case, and learning what it means to run a successful business – all just from my house. I was beginning to fully understand the different hats a private investigator wears. From social media, to background checks, to working with attorneys and detectives, to security training, private investigation covers many areas. I was able to meet with a police detective in the fraud unit and discover how private investigators are able to work alongside them and provide them with new information to help the case. Getting the chance to meet detectives and attorneys has been an unexpected bonus on top of the hands-on experience and new information I’ve gained.

I’m very excited to see what the rest of my summer looks like as an intern. After just a few days, I’ve already seen just how versatile a private investigator must be due to the wide range of jobs they cover. I’ve learned that running a business isn’t all fun and games; it takes hard work and dedication. I’ve gotten hands-on experience working with different cases and even learning more about gun training and safety. This internship has already taught me what investigation really looks like, how important it is to clients and their lives, and what a career in private investigation may be like.
