How women in investigations and security are redefining what it means to be an asset in the field

In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re highlighting the women of Covert Results and the impact they’re making in a field that has traditionally been male-dominated. From surveillance to security operations, women are not just participating in the industry; they are redefining it.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with one of our private investigators, Katelynn, to talk about her experience, the realities of the field, and what being a woman in this line of work truly looks like.

“Being a woman is actually an advantage.”

While many assume that women face constant barriers in investigative work, her perspective challenges that narrative.

She explained that in many situations, especially surveillance, being a woman can be a strategic advantage. People are far less likely to suspect a woman is observing them.

“You can blend in anywhere, whether it’s a soccer mom, a girls’ night out, or just sitting in public. People don’t see women as a threat,” she said.

This ability to remain unnoticed can be one of the most valuable tools in an investigator’s skillset.

The strengths women bring to the field

Beyond blending in, she emphasized that women bring unique strengths that directly enhance investigative work.

Women tend to be:

  • Highly detail-oriented
  • Skilled at reading nonverbal communication
  • Naturally intuitive in high-pressure situations

“We notice the small things, and we’re good at reading emotions and body language,” she explained.

These skills can make a major difference during interviews or surveillance operations. In many cases, being approachable and non-threatening allows women to gather more information than their male counterparts.

Challenges are real, but different than expected.

While she noted that she hasn’t personally faced major barriers in investigations, she did acknowledge some realities of the job.

In security roles, physical strength can sometimes be a disadvantage in hands-on situations. However, she emphasized that women often excel in something just as important: de-escalation.

“Women are very good at de-escalating situations. You can reduce tension without having to use force,” she said.

In many cases, preventing a situation from escalating is far more valuable than responding to it physically.

The power of intuition

One of the most interesting themes throughout the interview was the importance of intuition.

She described it as something every woman understands—even if it’s hard to explain.

“Have you ever known something without knowing how or why? That’s intuition—and you have to lean into that,” she said.

In investigative work, trusting that instinct can be the difference between recognizing a threat early or missing it entirely.

From probation officer to private investigator

Before entering private investigations, she spent over a decade working as a probation officer in Nashville. That experience shaped her ability to read people, assess situations, and develop strong instincts.

Working in the field, especially in high-risk environments like gang units, forced her to rely on situational awareness and quick decision-making.

In one instance, she described recognizing danger before anything even happened.

“I saw something wasn’t right, and everything in me said, ‘Get out now.’ So I did,” she recalled.

That level of awareness isn’t something learned overnight, it comes from experience, exposure, and trusting your instincts.

Advice for women entering the field

For women interested in investigations or security, her advice was clear and direct:

  • Know your stuff – competence builds confidence
  • Stay humble – you can learn from everyone
  • Ask questions – never let ego get in the way of growth
  • Be aware of your surroundings – prevention is key

“Don’t be intimidated. Most people are willing to help you, you just have to be willing to learn,” she said.

Redefining the role of women in investigations

The biggest takeaway from this conversation is simple: women are not at a disadvantage in this field, they are an asset.

Whether it’s through intuition, communication, or adaptability, women bring a unique skillset that strengthens investigative and security work in ways that go far beyond physical strength.

At Covert Results, that impact is seen every day.

This Women’s History Month, we’re proud to recognize the women who continue to break stereotypes, bring new perspectives, and raise the standard in investigative and security work.
